I feel the need to get into the discussion I have recently read about agents. As writers we forget that agents are people like we are. Some share the same passion, writing. For others the joy of reading the jewel they spend hours, days, maybe years searching for is their passion.
I know there are writers who have no doubt how brilliant they are. I wish I were one, but that is something I have yet to experience.
What we, as writers, need to keep in mind is that book selling is a business. Albeit agents, I am sure for the most part, are lucky enough to love their work, it is a job for which there are expectations. I understand this, because, as a ‘Bean Counter’ (teller in a financial institution), I have goals expected of me, as well. To keep their jobs and continue to help writers get their books out to the right places, so do the agents we seek to impress.
All the millions of aspiring authors must be vigilant and follow through on the pledges and promises we make these agents. We must, now and into the future, polish our craft. No matter how brilliant you consider yourself, know there is much out there to learn.
I have no doubt the agents, who have been gracious enough to share their time with me, are sincere and have the same love of reading I do. Actually they may love it even more. They spend their work and leisure time enduring the brilliant and not so brilliant. Their reward? Sometimes drivel, from someone less brilliant than they believe themselves to be. Or these agents may have to endure angry barbs, because what was presented was either not what they were looking for, or just not good enough to be accepted for representation.
If you are lucky, as I have been, you may experience the gracious consideration of these very busy people. I want to say for all aspiring authors “Thank You.” Please continue to put up with our bad manners and inconsiderate comments. We love what we do, and dream of being the diamond for which you search.
