“Can’t we just stay here?” Colli looked around. She’d never seen such a myriad of colors blend together so intoxicatingly.
“There’ll be plenty of time for that later.” Sung stepped forward. “Don’t forget your commitment.”
Colli sighed. “Yes…” She wanted to complain, but thought better of it.
Ignoring her, Sung turned to his left and walked away. When he reached the latticed barrier, he bent to lift a gray cylinder. Stark against bright colors, it flipped smoothly up on hinges that extended over his head. He stepped into a black circle before Colli, Keleon and Mary could catch up. With an easy gliding motion, he turned and turned, descending out of sight.
Cautiously Colli moved closer. She looked down into darkness. Sung was nowhere to be seen.
“Come on. We don’t have time to waste.” Sung’s voice reached to pull them through the opening.
“Nothing to worry about.” Keleon pushed past Colli to follow Sung’s example. Mary practically jumped in after him.
It was difficult to leave the vibrant colors, but Colli knew she had to. She gathered the beauty into her memory. With a heavy sigh that seemed to be her habit lately, she too stepped forward. For a moment she floated, suspended in mid-air. Only when she started to twist in the same way as had the others, did she leave the brilliant colors behind. A soft sound from above, barely audible, startled her as darkness swirled in. She faltered.
“Don’t stop. Move your feet as if you’re walking down stairs.” The soft confidence of Keleon’s voice chased her fears away. “That’s good. You’re almost there.”
Dark eased into soft gray. She noticed it first in her peripheral vision. Light grew and swirled forward with the added dimension of the colors she’d left behind. They blended softly and flowed over vague forms in the gloom before her. Ghostly outlines made Colli glad to have the others standing close.
“Follow me. Colli, you first.” Sung’s dominant form turned to lead down a long hallway.
“Wow.” When it opened into a massive cavern, Colli couldn’t help but stop and stare. The light brightened to soft twilight. She had only seen pictures of such grandeur before.
“Let’s go.” Sung’s words prodded them on.
“We’re in the Cavern of Chiefs,” Mary whispered.
Statues lined the walls. Five, on either side of the chamber, flowed in on one another to join in a gentle touch of limbs. A swirl of radiating lights grew above each one.
Sung moved toward the center. “Come over here.” His voice echoed back.
“What are these?” Colli barely breathed out the words.
“Later.” Sung ignored the question.
Lights above each statue grew brighter, chasing shadows away. These were not merely inanimate objects. Within each of the figures a being waited, looking down on them.
“It would seem you were right, Sung,” said a male voice from the middle right of the chamber. Long thick tubes on an angular shaped head moved in a mesmerizing motion, when he nodded with approval.
Colli swayed toward the voice.
“No.” Sung’s command tone captured her attention.
She turned back.
“Mary. Keleon stay here.” He motioned Colli toward the circle of light that formed before her.
In the center on a raised platform, a padded chair swiveled slowly. It would allow Colli a better view of the statues and their inhabitants.
It gives them a better view of me, too. Her shoulders tightened with the realization.
“Sit down,” was all Sung said before he joined Mary and Keleon in the shadows.
