One Week Closer to The Surrey International Writers Conference

This year I’m going to the Surrey International Writers Conference with less confidence in my ability to be publish. Nonetheless I have not lost my passion for my writing.

I completed and submitted the short story for #siwc17 writing contest. I’m not sure if is any good. I’ll have to wait and see if I get any response.

Now I’m back to working on two of my writing projects. One of these is an edit of my first book. I love this story and understand more each edit that I travel through. The other is a midgrade urban fantasy. My only unsuccessful NaNoWriMo attempt, I have gotten more out of it, than any of the others so far.

Coming soon, in November, I’ll work to polish and add another 50k words to my first @NaNoWriMo attempt and success. I’ve never done this before, my other NaNo challenges have all been original stories.

For now, I’m going to finish @The Creative Hour working on “Misty’s Magical Shed” for my writers’/critique group on Sunday.

Keep the coffee flowing.

Last Chance for the Latest Contest

I’m moving in on the deadline for the latest contest that I want to enter. It’s too late to have my writers’ group go over it. However, after the contest is over, I will still share it with them.

I have been working with yatmal and zarln. Two sprites, they enjoy spending time together. yatmal (it is not a mistake that her name is not capitalized) retreats to the spant, a bubbling tub of pure hot water. A getaway from all the expectations that weigh her down, a deadly secret carries her into a dilemma that changes her life forever. The fate of her planet and the life of her new friend depend on her ability to overcome her greatest fear.

So now, I need to write the story. This is a character who I met accidentally in my first book. She comes across as a sparkling personality that adds joy and light to the room. Life excites her, maybe mostly because everything around her is so much bigger than she is. yatmal and I have been communicating for over a month now, maybe over two months. It’s time to write the story.

Wish me luck and keep the coffee flowing.

What a Week

I’m trying to get work done on the story for The Surrey International Writers Conference writing contest, and not having much success. Two hours at the dentist for a deep cleaning didn’t help.

On the ceiling overhead were two posters. One was of golden leaves on a wonderful green background. A saying about leaves, magic and butterfly wings got my imagination going. One thing I am having difficulty writing  within my story, is how to show the tiny size of my protagonist. Looking at the leaves, I realized she could hide under one of these. But where, in the story, would I put it, if I were to show this?

It could go at the beginning, but how would it fit in? One way would be to start all over with the story. I’m not sure that I’m ready to do that. Then what else? In the middle or where the second deluge overtakes her. This is one big challenge after another.

There is less that 10 days to complete each of these challenges. I need to have a good solid draft to take to my writers’ group on Sunday. That doesn’t leave much time.

Add to that a root canal scheduled for tomorrow and I definitely have a difficult journey ahead. If there are no challenges, there is no excitement.

Keep the coffee flowing.

What To Do This Week?

This week is short by my day job standards. Work will be hectic, because of the holiday as well as other factors. I still need to find, or rather make time for my writing. Yesterday, I concentrated on my latest short story. That’s what I’ll dedicate The Creative Hour to, this week.

Looking at what’s going on thought the nation, it’s easy just to sit back and let fear overwhelm. That is not just fear for myself, but for also for those through out my country. Our so called leadership seem so much more concerned with their own self-importance rather than the well-being of those they are elected to represent.

Along with other concerns, fires in my state are making out door activities more difficult for many. Even this seems a little petty with the suffering of those in Houston. The loss of everything they own, leaves me sitting on the couch feeling guilty.

I am very lucky in so many ways, not the least of which is having a day job to go to each weekday. Add to that my writing and I have more than so many people.

With that thought, it’s time to get ready for my day job. Throughout the day I will spend time on my writing.

Keep the coffee flowing.
